Q&A with Isaiah Kaiser, CEO and Founder of Auxilium Health
HJK Digital:
Can you provide an overview of your health tech startup and the problem it aims to solve?
Auxilium Health:
Auxilium Health, Inc is developing innovative bio-materials to fight wound infections. Our mission is rooted in addressing a substantial health problem that is not widely recognized: the prevalence of hard-to-heal wounds, affecting an estimated 8 million individuals in the United States alone. Despite the high number of individuals impacted, the issue remains largely unknown to the broader public. Particularly concerning is the significant proportion of diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) patients who face complications – ranging from 20% to 60%. These complications often increase the risk of lower extremity amputation, leading to a startlingly high 5-year mortality rate of close to 60%, a rate that surpasses that of some cancers. By leveraging advanced technology and scientific expertise, Auxilium aims to produce low-cost, smart bio-materials to mitigate wound infections. In doing so, we are poised to not only heal wounds more effectively but also to significantly improve the lives of millions of patients and, ultimately, change the landscape of wound care.
HJK Digital:
What inspired you to start a health tech company? Were there any personal experiences or gaps in the healthcare industry that motivated you?
Auxilium Health:
My journey into the health tech space was initially sparked by my engagement with tough/deep-tech during my Ph.D. studies, where I began to venture into the entrepreneurial world. This exploratory phase took a turn when I was introduced to Aparna Agrawal, Ph.D., who later became my co-founder and the CTO at Auxilium. Together, we saw the potential to commercialize her dissertation work. We started by speaking with hundreds of stakeholders within the wound care sector and received overwhelmingly positive feedback, which was not just encouraging but eye-opening. With the knowledge that this technology could significantly improve patient outcomes and our team's deep expertise in this area, we felt a sense of duty and obligation to bring this innovation to market. We didn’t evaluate this just as a business opportunity - but as a chance to make a meaningful difference in the lives of millions of patients. As a result, we took the leap, and Auxilium was born.
HJK Digital:
How does your product/service address the specific challenges or pain points in the healthcare sector?
Auxilium Health:
Our solution addresses key challenges in the healthcare sector by offering unique capabilities not available in traditional wound dressings. Our bio-material not only helps prevent infections but also actively monitors the wound. Unlike conventional products, our technology is designed to manage, monitor, and control the wound environment. It has demonstrated the capability to enhance cell proliferation - vital for wound healing - and disrupt infectious biofilms that hinder healing. But another of its distinguishing features is its ability to monitor infection. Should an infection arise within the wound, our dressing changes color, providing a clear and immediate indicator of the issue. This functionality allows clinicians to maintain an undisturbed healing environment as the dressing does not need to be removed for inspection, eliminating unnecessary dressing changes. As a result, our product offers the healthcare sector a more efficient and effective means of wound management, prioritizing patient comfort and improved clinical outcomes aligned with value-based models.
HJK Digital:
What is the unique value proposition of your health tech solution compared to existing alternatives?
Auxilium Health:
Over the past few decades, existing wound care solutions have seen minimal innovation, often bearing prohibitive costs exceeding $1,000 per application while requiring additional supplementary products. Unfortunately, many of these solutions require continual intervention, exposing the wound to potential bacterial contamination. This often leads to excessive waste, complications, increased costs, and infections. Auxilium’s unique value proposition lies in transforming this dynamic by offering a multi-faceted and cost-effective approach to wound care. We consider our dressing as creating an 'incubator' for healing, providing the best environment for the wound. Our product has a distinct architecture, microstructure, and composition, offering novel characteristics designed to enhance healing and prevent and monitor infections. We believe our solution is positioned to drive a significant shift in wound care, contributing to lower overall costs and improved patient outcomes..
HJK Digital:
In terms to go-to market planning, what are the top 2 areas of focus that a founder needs to prioritize?
Auxilium Health:
Although there are a lot of important areas of focus, its vital founders focus on understanding the customer. This is paramount to any go-to-market strategy. To provide a product or service that meets customers' needs and expectations, you need to know who your customers are, what they need, how they behave, and what influences their purchasing decisions. Another focus should be on value proposition and differentiation, which can be more difficult. Your product or service needs to offer something unique and valuable to your target customers. This could be superior quality, better pricing, innovative features, or other factors that set you apart from your competition. When you understand your customer, it helps you better understand your value propositions.
HJK Digital:
What are the biggest challenges you have faced as a health tech entrepreneur, and how have you overcome them?
Auxilium Health:
One of the biggest challenges I've faced as a health tech entrepreneur stems from my background in aerospace engineering and material science, which initially left me unfamiliar with some of the nuances of the healthcare system. The learning curve involved understanding not only how the healthcare system operates but also its limitations and areas where it can fall short. A significant aspect is understanding the regulatory and reimbursement landscape. Figuring out the appropriate regulatory and reimbursement pathway for our product, which varies based on our specific claims, can be complex. Your business model, funding strategy, regulatory pathway, and timeline all play together. These are critical areas that have required significant focus and constant learning for me. Thankfully, I’ve surrounded myself with those with expertise in the (many) areas I lack. It is important that, as entrepreneurs, we’re open to constant learning and feedback - even if the feedback is hard to hear. This mindset has helped me navigate some of these obstacles and better understand the industry we're innovating.
HJK Digital:
How do you stay updated with the latest advancements and trends in the health tech industry?
Auxilium Health:
Maintaining a pulse on the latest advancements and trends in the health tech industry is an ongoing commitment. As a scientist and researcher at heart, I've always been captivated by the rapid pace of advancement, particularly in fields such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). These are areas I explored during my Ph.D., and their increasing integration into healthcare is exciting. My growing connections within the healthcare and technology ecosystems have been invaluable in keeping me informed about the industry's trajectory. These relationships foster dialogues and enable a mutual exchange of ideas and information that drive innovation. Additionally, I regularly engage with industry-specific content such as the Project Medtech Podcast – also excited to follow Hello Heathtech Blog. These types of platforms provide insightful discussions on a wide array of healthcare topics, featuring insights from experts in the field. Even further, they help me to understand different perspectives, stay aware of the latest developments, and inspire new ideas for our work at Auxilium.
HJK Digital:
What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs looking to enter the health tech space?
Auxilium Health:
Persistence is key: Persistence is crucial in health tech, but it must not overshadow your well-being. Tackle obstacles head-on and strategically, but remember to pause and recharge. Entrepreneurship isn’t a sprint; it’s a marathon.
Execution is everything: A great idea is only as good as its execution. Proper execution of your idea is critical, but rigid plans can hinder progress. Prepare thoroughly and build a strong team, but stay ready to pivot and adapt as needed. Balance your detailed planning with an adaptable mindset.
Being an entrepreneur is not just about building a successful startup but also about taking care of your mental and physical health. Remain committed to your vision but be adaptable. Both strategies are key for successful health tech entrepreneurs.
